StephBlog: Stuffed Kongs

StephMillerBioPic Here's another blog from our friend Steph of Recess with Steph, talking a bit more about some ways to train/entertain your dog: KONGS: Please don’t leave the store without 1-3 Kongs in your bag! Dogs are animals that are genetically programmed to hunt for their food. Part of the reason there is such a prevalence of behavior problems in pet dogs is that they have so little mental challenge or work to do: their food is given to them for free. Zoos have had some success in decreasing behavior problems and improving the quality of life of many of their predator and primate species by giving them problems to solve in order to obtain their food. This same environmental enrichment concept can be applied to domestic dogs, who thoroughly enjoy finding hidden food and dissecting their stuffed chew toys.  You can store 4-5 ready-made stuffed Kongs in the freezer to give to your dog upon your departure. This will increase positive associations with not only you leaving (your departure = your dog’s favorite Kongtime), but also help build positive associations with his crate. Imagine that, a dog who is happy to be left alone! I will gladly share a Kong Stuffing Recipe guide if you email me here: www.recesswithsteph.com
