Do not administer more than the recommended dosage. Contraindicated for pets with intestinal obstruction or are experiencing abdominal pain from unknown causes. Contraindicated with useage of water pills due to the risk of decreased potassium.
May potentiate hypertensive drugs. Senna is a type of laxative called a stimulant laxative. Demonstrated liver protecting, detoxifying and toning actions may potentiate the metabolism of drugs for liver conditions and may reduce the half-life of drugs that require metabolization in the liver. Stimulant laxatives can decrease potassium levels in the body. Senna may interact with Digoxin (Lanoxin) and Warfarin (Coumadin.). In some animals, Senna can cause diarrhea, but it is rare. If your pet takes warfarin do not take excessive amounts of senna and use under the care of your vet. Senna should not be taken with water pills as the combination can lead to dangerously low levels of potassium for your pet.
Senna is a laxative stimulant. Side effects can occur, including stomach discomfort, cramps, and diarrhea if dosage is exceeded. Use caution if your pet has been diagnosed with IBD (Irritable Bowel Disease). Senna is not intended to be used long term and is not recommended for use beyond 30 days, or without a break in between use for 7-10 days. Use at the recommended dosage only. Longer use can cause the bowels to stop functioning normally and might cause dependence on laxatives. Long-term use can also change the amount or balance of some chemicals in the blood (electrolytes) that can cause heart function disorders, muscle weakness, liver damage, and other harmful effects.
Overuse of Senna can cause electrolyte disturbances and potassium deficiency. Senna should not be used in animals with dehydration or uncontrolled diarrhea as these may be signs of a more serious health problem. Please see your vet. Senna should be used with caution in animals with abdominal pain (either diagnosed or undiagnosed), intestinal blockage, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, appendicitis, stomach inflammation, anal prolapse, or hemorrhoids.
